I thought I’d kick off this Substack newsletter by highlighting some work I’ve done that I’m especially proud of in the depolarization space.
My book Defusing American Anger: this is currently only in ebook, because I am in the process of editing it and shortening it to get it into a paperback version. Check out some reviews and mentions of it here.
My depolarization-focused podcast episodes, which I’ve compiled here. I attempted to put the ones I thought were most interesting and compelling for a mainstream audience near the top of the list.
A list of polarization-related books. I was surprised I hadn’t seen such a compilation. Even as someone actively searching for such books, I was always stumbling across new ones I hadn’t heard of before, and some of the best books I read on this subject I wish I’d read years ago. There’s some great work that’s been done by some smart and caring people and, unfortunately, the nature of polarization means that these works don’t get the mainstream attention they deserve.
A video making the case for depolarization to Republicans and Democrats. I made this video to try to accomplish two things: a) make a succinct case for why people should care about polarization and want to reduce it, and b) show how you can a wide range of political beliefs and see depolarization as a worthy goal (because a common objection to this work is that working on depolarization requires one to be a “centrist” or a “moderate,” which is just wrong).
