What's the best strategy for reducing toxic divides? Cultural change or systemic change?
A talk with David Foster, of Know The System
I wanted to share a talk I had with David Foster, creator of KnowTheSystem.org and author of the recently released book Moderates of the World Unite!, which gives ideas for how we can change the media environment to improve political discourse and decrease toxic polarization.
We get on a topic that I think is important: whether it makes more sense to focus on grassroots cultural change efforts (which is what I’ve focused on) or to focus on making systemic changes (which is what David focuses on). This is an important question because a) we don’t have that many people working on these things, so b) it will help if we know the most efficient levers we have to work with. We want to get the most bang for our buck, basically.
This might interest people even apart from polarization-related topics as it’s basically a conversation about shifting culture, which can apply to so many things.
