While reading this, I kept coming back to a quote I read about a year ago and have been applying a lot to the sorts of things you're talking about:

While it is a simplification of the heart of your article, I think it applys well and this is something I'm advocating to those who are close to me in my life, the importance of keeping an open mind and allowing new information to come in; not jumping to conclusions before having enough evidence, and all the critical thinking things that I value so much.
